The Use of Mathematic Concepts in Graphic Design

Graphic design is the craft of creating visual content to communicate messages. It is the process of visual communication and problem-solving through the use of typography, photography, and illustration.  Some designers think that mathematic is not important for their job. They think mathematic don’t has any connection with their task, but who knows if some mathematic concepts are used in graphic design world. In graphic design, some mathematic concepts are really useful for their job, such as geometry, vector, and golden ratio.

First, geometry. Geometry is mathematic concept that talk about shapes, and their properties. Geometry is divided by two, plane geometry, and solid geometry. Plane geometry is about flat shapes like lines, circles, and triangles, and solid geometry is about three dimensional objects like cubes, prism, cylinders, and spheres. All of those geometric elements have been so widely used in graphic design all around the world for ages. Geometry can be used for making some posters, logos, brochures, even web designs.

The second is vector. Vector is an object that has both magnitude and a direction. In graphic design, we can ignore the direction. Graphic design that use vector theory is called as a vector graphic. Vector graphic is the creation of digital images through a sequence of commands or mathematical statements that place lines and shapes in a given two-dimensional or three-dimensional space.

The third and the last, golden ratio. Golden ratio is a special number approximately equal to 1.618. it appears many times in geometry, art, architecture, and graphic design. We find golden ratio when we divide a line into two parts so that the long part divided by the short part is also equal to the whole length divided by the long part. Golden ratio has been used to create design elements that have an ideal visual appeal. Because the shape is rooted in nature and mathematics, it’s the perfect combination of balance and harmony. Simply, the golden ratio (also called the golden rectangle and golden mean) is a shape with a proportion of 1 to 1.618.

At first glance, mathematics and graphic design might look like two different worlds, but through the vast disciplines of mathematics, there is a lot of simple tools that can create something that can be called an art in some unexpected ways. From those three explanations about connections between mathematic and graphic design, can be concluded if mathematic is play a role in graphic design. The importance of mathematics in graphic design turns people’s thinking about mathematics around. For the example making logos that make them learn about geometry, vectors to determine the magnitude when making vector graphics, and last ratios to determine proportions in making graphic designs. They should be realized and change their mind which is mathematics really helps their work.

Sekian esai berbahasa inggris dari gue, terima kasih.
